AUDIO INNOVATION FOR OVER 35 YEARS

I provided engineering support to allow what I believe was the BBC’s first file-based programme, “The Book of Revelations” recorded in the Radiophonic Workshop.

In 2010 I ran an experimental high quality wide dynamic range stream of BBC Radio 3 for the last week of the “proms” concerts, which later became a regular service under the name “HD Sound”.

I realised the Fraunhofer audio object technology could be used to provide an interesting audience experience from the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis championship. The “Grunt Controller” experiment was fun, but also demonstrated a potential solution to the age-old problem of deciding how much “background” sound to mix under the speech. The experiment proved why one size will never suit all, especially with an aging population.

In 2014 I delivered all of the BBC’s evening proms concerts from the Royal Albert Hall in surround sound without increasing production cost. The experiment provided an enhanced user experience for online listeners. The audio decoded entirely within the browser, without the need for third-party players or plug-Ins.

In May 2015 my contribution to BBC Radio was recognised when I was honoured with the “Gold Award” at a ceremony in BBC Broadcasting House.
